No, his account has already been closed. The credit reports simply haven't been updated to reflect that yet. It's not likely they'll be updated in the next two days, so there's no real potential for harm in waiting and the potential benefit of making new the card appear to be almost a year older (due to a quirk in the way Amex reports things, assuming ddallas is correct).
