Maybe I haven't flown enough to know this but if planes can simply fly above bad weather, why do pilots sometime change the flight plan to avoid flying near storms?
Or they just fly around the system so you won't complain how bumpy the ride was. Since you are not take off/land at the affected airports, you have no case of change flight without fees unless your flight is canceled or on Y fare.
