To the OP: I would definitely go for the extra ten points and for Gold - if you're in the UK or Europe at all, then a one way UK Domestic or Euro Traveller flight will get you the ten points required.

For me, the advantages of Gold are - soft landing to Silver (just in case...), F check-in and F lounge access, free seat selection for all tickets and all classes, greater likelihood of upgrades, Gold EC phone line, overall being treated better in case of disrupted journey (hopefully), increased mileage accrual.
