This happened to me on a pre-Xmas mid-con 757 out of SFO. Y was zeroed out several days in advance; the F seatmap showed 3/4 of the F cabin open. A day or two before the flight, AA zeroed out F (from F7).
Ultimately, the plane went out completely full--and included a number of pax from at least one other cxld AA flight that day. The upgrade request list was pretty short at the gate, and everyone got upgraded.
