So I do most of my flying to either the UK, Europe, South America and occasionally to Asia.

I don't do very much domestic US flying and when I do I'm not particular about airline loyaly. My EXP status (and previously P) usually comes from EQPs, since I fly first or business; never really get even close on segments or miles.

If I had a chance to get a status match to Gold on BA, should I switch programs? BA offers more flights to the UK, my most frequent destination. To Asia I would still be doing mostly Cathay to Hong Kong, so no change there.

The real difference would be going to Brazil, where there is no BA flight.
