A couple of days ago I was connecting at MSP to YYZ and as we got ready for takeoff, the captain noted an engine malfunction and dumped us back at the gate. We waited for a replacement CRJ-200 and left 3 hours late. At the gate they gave everyone an electronic credit voucher for $200 (no skymiles option), which I think is an excellent deal. At the initial departure they had asked offered $400 for one VDB to take a flight on the same route four hours later and one person got it. When I checked, that later flight actually left seven hours later, so maybe that person wound up with even more. The day before, the last flight of the day had been cancelled entirely and people got a hotel room and ten bucks for dinner. I think it was because some of those folks were on our flight that we all were rewarded. It seems to be very difficult to get from MSP to YYZ in a CRJ these days when it's not snowing. As an aside, I had only paid $300 + tax for the flight from HNL to YYZ.
