Years ago I used to "sleep around" with SPG and Hilton and HI. Found waaay too much inconsistency, i.e. some 4 points were great some dumps. Ditto for Hamptons. I think over at the HH board they even have a thread detailing which Hamptons are dumps and which are good.

When I learned that when I booked with Marriott there were no (negative) surprises I was hooked. I even know where to look for the trash cans in the rooms.

I do agree that in the UK some of the standards are a little laxer. In particular I used to stay at the REN LGW which was a really tired old dump with horrible carpet. But a great restaurant. Believe it is no longer flagged a Ren.
