Air travel is not particularly reliable, but half the fun is the overland adventuring (it just takes more time). You really would only need/want to fly from Bamako to Timbuktu or back to save the few travel days and sore back it would take otherwise. You can get everywhere else by bus, taxi and "baché" (covered pickup truck with benches in the back).
