The problem is that the airline didn't make up this rule, it effect any airline flying NZ-US. So even if you fly on QF now you will be subject to the same aviation security restrictions on this route. The airlines are just following what they have been asked to do by the US Homeland Security Dept.
There is no such rule imposed by the US. Period. If you disagree, find this alleged rule and post it here.
