I found this thread while searching for an answer with respect to baggage fees on HA, but I couldn't get the answer that I was looking for, hence I am bumping this thread.
My girlfriend and I will be flying on a UA Star Alliance / Saver Award in F in June 2011:
MUC (LH F) SFO (UA F) KOA // LIH (UA F) LAX (LH F) MUC
I am LH SEN and UA1P (*G). Having searched this forum I know that any non-HA status doesn't count. We plan on island hopping over the course of three weeks
KOA-OGG-HNL-LIH
and my preference would be flying with HA. But what about the fact that we might be charged baggage fees in conjunction with interisland travels? I/we have lots of free allowance on the way to Hawaii due to the fact that we're flying in First Class and I get the additional *G allowance. Most likely we'll have 2-3 pcs in total.
In 2009 in flew from Europe to Hawaii on UA, flying MUC-LHR-LAX-HNL // LIH-LAX//LAS-ORD-MUC, booking a separate HA flight HNL-LIH. Getting to the airport I was able to check my bag for free after talking to the lady at the check in in HNL, showing her my e-ticket receipt for the international trip.
My questions are now:
1. can baggage still be checked for free in conjunction with an international ticket?
2. if the answer to q1 is "yes" how many bags can be checked for free and what is the best procedure doing that?
3. if the answer to qs is "no" would the standard interisland rates apply?
4. would anyone recommend any other airline for travel w/in Hawaii given the situation we'll be in?
I found the following statement on the HA website (
http://help.hawaiianair.com/app/answ...tail/a_id/80):
Exemptions from 1st and 2nd Checked Bag Fees:
The charge for an oversized bag may depend on what you are transporting. Please check our Contract of Carriage for specific information on charges for special items.
