Re the stopover, I've tried both flying direct and stop overs and would recommend flying direct unless you have 3 or 4 days minimum to spend somewhere. I found 1 or 2 night stop overs just elongated the jet leg and eat into enjoyment time in Oz.

If you've time Hong Kong is a great place for a stop over though
