International flight check-in - second leg can't check in because > 23 hours? LH/FRA

Hello all,
I'm trying to check in with LH and I have a question. I've called LH 3 times and I am ready to throttle someone... I am caught in the JFK blizzard mess and trying to check in to my flights. I am traveling JFK -> FRA -> BOM. All on the same booking code / itinerary.

JFK->FRA (United booking, LH operated)
FRA->BOM (LH)

When I try to check in via the LH website, I am able to checkin / print the boarding pass for the first leg of the journey (JFK->FRA). However, the second leg issues an error message and tells me that I am unable to check in online and to call the call center. The call center has told me 3 different stories (we don't operate that flight - not accurate it's an LH flight, exit security and check in at FRA for the second leg, and we don't offer phone check in).

Needless to say I'm doing backflips here as this is an important personal trip.

I should be able to check-in / print boarding passes prior to departing from JFK correct?
