Yes always ask as soon as possible and even if the flight(s) is/are/appears to be wide open, I always ask* to be put on the list as you never know what happens while you're flying (irrops/cancellations and so on). sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't

*I've never been refused and this is with me being put on the VDB list at SFO for my return at IAD on a same day m/r or even at CDG for a bump ex-iad and ex-LAX for my continuing flights home
