Maybe it would help if you give more details.
But all airlines sell tickets at various fares and various conditions. The more expensive the ticket the more flexibility you get. Dirt-cheap tickets have no flexibility.
This has been the case for decades, nothing new there. The conditions are indicated when you book the ticket. So hard to claim that your parents ignored them.
Simply stating that you thought that all airline tickets are flexible is like coming from Mars and pretending to ignore Earth laws.
