Why the large difference in taxes/surcharges?

Maybe someone here can explain to me the big difference:

I had original booked SFO-LHR-HAM in September to fly Dec 21, returning Dec 31 in F. The total taxes and surcharges for 2 people using 2-4-1 voucher and 150,000 miles came to $713.xx

Due to the chaos from the snow Dec 18, we didn't get to fly. Everything canceled. Had to call to get miles and voucher refunded, as even they had processed it (as per BAEC person I talked to) but didn't return neither.

So I rebooked now for May 4 through May 16, same flights, yet the total now came to $1,193.xx. I know the fuel surcharge went up, but not that much, did it?
