Personally, I wouldn't stand in line either. I'd just walk up to the desk, wave the card to get someone's attention, set it behind the counter, and go about my day.
Of course, it would be easier on everyone if there was just a locked drop box in the lobby to return these things.
If I see one when leaving the hotel, I tend to hand the key to the bellhop, and ask if he can get it to the right place where ever that may be. The front desk staff is usually pretty busy in the morning with check-outs, and I don't want to disrupt them.
