Shorten stay means totally different rate?

I have a four night stay 12/30-1/3 at a good rate (cancellation is 24 hours). I wanted to shorten my stay to 12/30-1/1 but when I called, they said I need rebook to the current prevailing rates. Is this correct? Am I not able to just cancel the last two nights and keep my rate?
