I think the OP was thinking he had to go to an ATM first and then charge with cash. I'm sure he was unaware that you can charge a Suica/Pasmo with an international CC at JR's Narita airport offices.
Correct, I was not aware. So that is an office only (vs machine) thing? Only downside is international credit card fees but that's more manageable.
