Although the same pilot(s) were responsible for the original error and were demoted (maybe even dismissed - can't remember which) after the incident despite their heroics. It took a union campaign to get them reinstated.
A little known side event (loaded with irony) is the AC vehicle with ground staff and mechanics sent out from Winnipeg to Gimli AFB to assess the damaged plane....ran out of fuel on the way
