Any particular reason NZ doesn´t through check? Is an immigration/customs issue or is just NZ refusing to do so?
Is there a fast track for immigration/customs and/or security?
I may check-in online for the TG flight, as I assume the deadline for dropping off luggage is slightly more generous than the3 deadline for checking in?
Through check isn't offered on separate tickets because NZ doesn't want to bear any costs associated with misconnection (of you or your luggage).

My experience of getting express cards for Australia when flying Air NZ is very hit & miss.
