I've had really good luck using my passport card for ID at the checkpoint. I was even able to use it when I was carded at a grocery store while buying beer the other day.

It's especially handy when the check-out clerk wants to see a picture ID when you're making credit card purchases. If you show them your driver's license, they'll have access to
both your credit card and home address(which frequently is the credit card billing address.... imagine what the combination of the two can do in the wrong hands). I only give them my passport card, which is enough to verify my identity.
