Americans are treated pretty by the Chinese consulates in the US: fast processing, tolerable wait times, good visas.

The going rate for Americans to get good (one or more years and large days/stay) visas in Beijing is y6000+ right now and the process can take as long as 40 days. The bulk of that money is used to grease wheels in many places I assume. These visas are issued in some pretty random places (e.g. Dondang, Huhaohete, Lanzhou).

BTW, they blame the current strict visa environment on the Asian Games, but I fail to see the logic. Nobody --well let's just say I've met to meet one person who did, including my Guangzhou friends -- went to the Asian Games, right?
