Seems to be a bit hit and miss as to whether or not NZ enforces this rule on flights to or from USA. I personally always take 2 carry on bags and have never been questioned. *G is permitted 2 bags for all other flights on NZ, although beware that they have been checking weight lately and making pax check bags over 15lbs limit
"Business Class, Premium Economy* and Star Alliance Gold customers (including Airpoints Gold and Gold Elite) are permitted two pieces of cabin baggage with a maximum weight of 7kg (15lbs) and maximum total dimensions (length + width + height) of 118cm (46.5").
Exception: Only one piece is permitted for travel to, through or from USA."
