No joke on this one. NZ Customs wanders around baggage claim with dogs and has passengers put their carryons on the ground so the dogs can sniff them. They are quite thorough. The dog registered a hit on my backpack and triggered an exhaustive search, when all I had done is carry a package of beef jerky onboard that I ate during the flight.
