1) yes can through check and thus avoid need to clear immigration & customs at AKL (just go through security to departures area)

2) NZ will not through check - you will need to clear immigration & customs at SYD and then check in with TG. The CHC flight arrives early am at peak hour (when it can easily take more than an hour to clear immigration & customs), so it will pay not to dawdle.
