fwiw, that's the rule as i've always understood it. enforcement has been lax the last few years, but in the early days of laptops being out, they were adamant that there be nothing else in the bin. so i'm with the TSO on this one -- "it's always been the rule." doesn't mean it's always been consistently enforced....
Thanks for the heads up. If that is the rule, I will follow it. However, this is the first time I have ever been informed of it. I pass through that same airport about 10x a year and it is suddenly an issue. Although I think its silly that they reran both the laptop and kippie bag in separate bins. At no time did the laptop or bag overlap. Others in the line also had their laptops re x-rayed.
If it's the rule, enforce it. The TSA calls it "inconsistency to keep terrorists on their toes." I call it poor training that deflects attention away from real threats. Based on previous experience, I will probably get yelled at for using too many bins at some point and told to put everything in one bin.
