Could there be two more oxymoronic concepts than "government assistance" and "union job protection?" Both played a part in the demise of Canada 3000, which crumbled into bankruptcy over the weekend, leaving tens of thousands of travellers stranded and nearly 5,000 people out of work. Although Canada 3000's problems, like those of the industry worldwide, are primarily related to Sept. 11, government ineptitude and trade union intransigence ushered in the airline's collapse.
