I often connect in Hong Kong. Sometimes I go to the Wing, take a shower, leave my carry on (First Class section - have not tried Business Class), and request a pass to go to immigration and airside. Never had a problem.

Upon returning after immigration, I go to the lounge, pick up my carry on and go on to my next flight.

I however did not have checked in luggage to be retrieved in HKG.
