I think we might have to agree to differ on this one. I still don't get it. If my partner were in an emergency situation of the kind you describe and I were on the other side of the world, that would be unbearable too. I don't see how's that really better than my being on the other side of the plane.
In other words, unfortunately terrible things can happen to our loved ones. In the broad scheme of things, being seated apart, most likely within sight of each other (we're talking about the CW cabin of a 777 here) is far from being the biggest of my worries.
