Yes and no.
The issue isn't really 720p but what codec was used to record. MP4 (h.264) will take far more processing power where a MKV encoded with Xvid/DivX should be no problem at all.
I'd suggest taking a sample of what you watch, put it on a USB stick, and go down to your local Bestbuy to try playing it.
