It's a problem when you're a 1K and your traveling companion is a 2P. In all likelihood you will get upgraded, but in some cases it's a crapshoot if they will be (in which case you wait it out and see). If there are 4 seats remaining and you're 2nd on the list and they're 37, then you can be proactive and tell them ahead of time that you're not interested. But in that crapshoot scenario, yeah, I've had some get pretty annoyed at me (this has happened several times this year), and to try and convince me not to do it a couple of times I've been told my original seat has already been given away (but when pressed to find a pair of seats, somehow my original still exists).

I would like to see some sort of a "buy-up" deal where you could use an instrument or pay with miles so that both members of a party cleared at the same time (once past the upgrade window).
I sure would be annoyed if that ended up taking away the seat I would have otherwise gotten. Just got a flight from ORD-SFO where I was the next on the list and didn't make it.
