Sort of. You do need to spend $200/yr on Amtrack tickets but you can subsequently cancel the ticket and have it refunded. The process goes like this:
1. Open Chase Amtrak card (had a nice signup bonus when I did it)
2. Buy an Amtrack ticket for several months out that is $200+ and refundable
3. Wait for Chase statement to close AND to see that statement's points have posted to your Amtrak account
4. Call Amtrack and initiate transfer (only took 2 days for mine to post to CO)
5. After transfer is complete cancel ticket
A couple limitations to be aware of:
- you can only transfer in increments of 5k
- max transfer of 25k per year
There may be more those are just a couple I have seen.
