I advise you to check the thread at the top of the forum labeled FAQ; it includes the answers to this basic question about how base miles are calculated. You are correct the first time you refer to "base miles", but not the second; I recommend reading up in the FAQ thread, which answers your questions.
Also, can you even upgrade on International fares with stickers? I always get N/A on the purchase page...
