If you want to use 3G you can use AT&T's insane prepaid rates and plans, works out to about $1/MB so very, very easy to rack up a big bill. I believe iPads are unlocked so buying an Australian data SIM and using that would be a much cheaper option
Or you can stick to using wifi and have a bill of $0 at the end of the month
For Apple info go to a proper site like Mac Rumours or TUAW. The guys at Best Buy are at best useless in my experience, just slightly worse than the employees at Apple Stores
