Flight Info Notification & Re-booking

I found my “standby” seat request card in my pocket from Monday (13DEC2010) & it prompted me to post this note. I was on the first flight from ORD to DTW this past Monday and I found out it was canceled when I arrived at the airport. The ticket agent told me that I had been re-booked to fly ORD – SDF – DTW with arrival on Tuesday (14DEC). This did not really work for me since I had meetings to attend Tuesday afternoon. He offered to put me on standby, but he didn’t really know if I would get on since all the flights were oversold. As I was waiting in the long line for security, I called my corporate travel agency and they told me that neither AA & UA had any open seats that morning. With every DL flight to DTW oversold, and with no SkyTeam status I did not think it was worth hanging around the airport in hope of getting on, so I left. My boss wasn’t happy, but the weather made for a good excuse.

I only fly about 10K a year on DL so I don’t have a lot of experience with how the DL automated system works. I found it very interesting that I received 2 emails – one to my personal email account & one to my work account to notify me to check in – which I did late Sunday night, but nothing to notify me that my flight was canceled or that I was re-booked. (Yes I am subscribed for "Last Minute Updates" within my SkyMiles profile to both my emails & mobile phone.) Is this typical? I was also surprised that I did not receive any type of follow on email apologizing for the travel disruption. I know it was weather related, but in this age of automation, I thought that they would at least acknowledge that I had to canceled the trip & that they had to give me a refund for my ticket.

Sorry for the long ramble of a post....
