If you've never been there before, you could spend all day walking up and down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, which is not affected by the awful tram route construction project. Sure, it's you and 10,000 other tourists, a few pub-crawling bachelor/bachelorette parties and shops selling tartans, but there's an amazing amount of history. My husband and I have made a few short hops to Edinburgh to stock up on whisky at Cadenhead's (also on the Royal Mile) and soak up the history. And, now that I think of it, there IS a good day trip- if you're a fan of the Da Vinci Code or just interesting architecture take the bus to Rosslyn (bus office around the corner from the Hilton Caledonian) and follow all the tourists on the short walk to the Rosslyn Chapel.
