This type of thing irritates me. The $1 UNICEF donation is put onto your bill, and you have to request at check-out for it to be removed. I would rather that the donation was opt-in where the desk agent asked if I wanted to contribute to UNICEF before the charge was placed onto my bill.

This surcharge is a bunch of baloney. The hotels are just following in the footsteps of the airlines with this "energy surcharge" BS.

The extra couple of bucks is plain and simple just additional revenue to the hotels. The hotels are just trying to make it sound like some kind of government mandated/imposed. I am not some kind of naive anti-capitalist. I understand that energy costs have skyrocketed here in California. I just wish that the hotels would increase the quoted rate and quit with this "surcharge" charade.

Since I have to pay the hotel occupancy tax on the surcharge, it is obviously NOT a governmental imposed fee. I just wish that I got SPG points for the surcharge

The next thing I know, my local grocery store is going to have an energy surcharge at the bottom of my grocery bill? Why don't all the gasoline stations just roll their prices back to a happy $0.38/gallon and tack on a $1.50 energy surcharge?
