I think Starwood has been doing this for many of their "flagship" properties in each city around the world. I recall their newest luxury collection property in Beijing being renamed from Beijing International Club Hotel to "St. Regis Beijing" about 1 year back. I dont remember the old/new redemption categories in this case, though.
