In the recently released government figures on change fees collected by the airlines, United made more in change fees than they did in baggage fees for the last month of the data. Change fees are not going anywhere, they are a huge profit center for the airlines.
It is a calculated risk. I have not had to cancel or change any of my last 10 flights. When restricted fares are usually 1/3 of the value of flexible fares, I will go restricted even when traveling business/first.
