To be sure the weather events in MSP and DTW were major operational challenges, but to launch planes and not have sufficient dug-out gates at the destination, that is just bone-headed. What is this the prayer and/or cross-fingers style of management?
There is much chaos in these situations, but the station manager at MSP should know the status of the gates. If they are not dug-out, this should be a known and communicated.
I don't think it was a matter of being "dug out" but that airplanes were sitting in all the gates. Perhaps more flights were delayed in their departure than expected when we departed. Honestly, I would rather have been in FSD waiting (and being close in case of any major issues) than sitting in SLC wondering if/when I might get to MN.
