This is not PRO or CON of the the OP's issues, but as to your question, look at the type of service you get into IAH on DL... from MEM, DTW, ATL.

Looking at how service to IAH has deteriorated in recent years, it is not hard to envision that DL is in the process of abandoning IAH to CO... or, at least, deemphasizing IAH on their schedule.
I agree with you, these are too major business cities... so the shift to RJs is inexplicable.
OP was talking about HOU which has typically been smaller aircraft. IAH still is mostly mainline.
