I'm getting a little tired of these threads......
No, they were not trying to screw you or the passengers on that flight by purposely sitting around.
Delta's entire operation has been in shambles the past couple of days due to the massive winter storm that marched across the country. 3 of their major hubs were compromised over the weekend and on Monday.
MSP was taken down on Saturday and finally started recovering on Monday
DTW was taken out on Sunday and started to recover on Monday
ATL was experiencing large delays on Monday due to snow and deicing on Monday.
The flight was most likely told to wait in IND because there was no room in ATL. It's called flow control. Too many planes trying to get into ATL at once and not enough gate space. ATL cancelled many flights Monday morning and was running behind the whole day.
Operations likely held your flight in IND until a certain time that they were ready to handle the flight. More cost-effective to hold a flight on the ground on the gate than have it circling in the air.
This weekend has not been an ordinary time for air travel and are not representative of normal operations. When a massive storm marches across the country there will be delays and cancelations.
