Sounds like they did recognize you with a gift. Since the lounge was closed and apparently there were no upgrades available you got exactly what is described in the benefits guide. Sorry if you were expecting more, but that is pretty standard across the industry.
I don't see this as any kind of industry standard through my own eyes
Hilton and Hyatt provides elite qualifying members breakfast 7 days a week in or out of their lounges open or closed
In the case of Hyatt for top tier members bonus points and full breakfast are guaranteed for every registered guest in your room
In the case of Priority Club and SPG though there is no promised breakfast benefit of any kind a number of the hotels offer lounge access or
complimentary breakfast sometimes just by simply asking or the hotel exceeding expectations
Although Marriott and their hotels may have the right to refuse top tier
Platinum members the courtesy of a free breakfast I personally don't see it
anyones best interest the hotel or the top tier member who can switch to a
competing brand of other program in the morning.
Having said that if one is sold on Marriott as there only brand or program of
preference then their is no need to look outside the Marriott Rewards program.
When lounges may be full I see this as a huge oversight and not fair to their
exceptional customers who are required to perform a minimum of 75 nights each year.I would say that makes it the most expensive program in which to earn elite status in with questionable recognition
My feet personally would be moving rapidly toward some other program in a hurry
