You got it all correct. Like I mentioned earlier, you also picked up on the fact that the question in the FAQ about having an award night alongside a paid stay isn't really answered. IMO, it's vagueness is just introducing more doubt. You'll get double points for the entire stay ending Jan 4. But nothing for the night of Jan 4.
I'm not sure what would happen if you had a paid stay for Dec 31 - Jan 3 with an award stay for the night of Jan 4. Technically, your entire stay would have the check-out day within the promo period, but none of the eligible nights would fall within the promo period.
