The last time I did exactly this, I unpacked the laptop, placed it in a neoprene sleeve (to be gifted with the laptop) and packed the packing materials in check in. Ran both laptops through security in their sleeves. At the other end, I just repacked the laptop and wrapped it. Since it was going to be opened anyway, I didn't see an issue with the seals at the far end.
Not carrying on the packing materials reduced the amount of carry-on space I needed.
