Thanks for all of the pointers and info. I really would like to visit Khao Lak but it sounds like I should plan a trip here when I have a bit more lead time and/or not in the apex of high season.

I'll be spending the time in Kuala Lumpur instead (I know - apples and oranges) but hope to make another attempt at Khao Lak in the not too distant future.
