Airlines do have a procedure where someone the person knows can go through to the gate with them, even if not flying that day, right?
At least the last time I did this, it was called a NPE (Non Passenger Escort), to see a minor (not flying UM) to the gate. You get something that looks like a boarding pass, same security check, etc.
