It's heavy, nasty, wet snow here in the upper midwest, not the stuff that even a very-well-prepared-for-winter airport like ORD can handle in any reasonable time. Did you see what happened to the Metrodome, which has seen its share of snow over the years? Metrodome roof deflates under weight of snow.

It sucks for all involved, but getting through ORD, MSP, or any other airport in the region is not going to be possible today. You asked if AA could reroute you on CO or UA through IAH or some other hub. However, they have to handle all of their own passengers who are also stranded because of weather in Chicago (their largest hub).
