Check out the expiration date on some of those coffee packets. On occasion, the Starbucks coffee packets are way old/expired.
I agree that it is most likely expired coffee mixed in with the crappy quality of the single cup coffee makers that have a hard time getting water hot enough.
I'm a coffee snob... If I'm going to be at a hotel for a few days and know that I will have a good amount of time in the room I will usually bring along an electric kettle and a french press.
