Actually, it can be. I've been kept in over night from a minor operation, because there was no-one at home to see if I had a bad reaction from the general anaesthetic. But if they cannot foresee any risk of you collapsing unnoticed and unaided, then you will likely be sent home as soon as you are ambulatory.
